PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Oversee the Company’s entire internal and external accounting functions. Direct the team responsible for external reporting, month-end close, payroll administration, stock administration, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other accounting related activities. Ensure compliance and reporting requirements are met. This person is the main focal point to ensure the accounting department serves the accounting needs of the overall company and the various operating groups within the organization, strategic partners, and investors.
Implement operational objectives and delegate assignments to subordinate managers and professional staff. Manage the interactions with the audit chair/committee as well as work closely with staff and management on projects and initiatives.
At the Director level, this position may develop corporate and/or organizational policies and authorizes the implementation of these policies. Provides general direction to and review of managers in various functional areas, groups and/or operations, etc. Recognized as an influential leader across functions and with external associates.
Depending on the level, this position may work on abstract problems and/or ideas or situations across functional areas of the business. Through assessment of intangible variables, identifies and evaluates fundamental issues providing strategy and direction for major functional areas. Requires in-depth knowledge of the functional area, business strategies, and the company’s goals.
As a member of the leadership team, this position is responsible for establishing and maintaining a work environment that fosters learning, respect, open communication, collaboration, integration, and teamwork.
MAJOR DUTIES OF POSITION:
- Review and approve monthly, quarterly and annual financial, regulatory and management reporting in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting is conducted on a timely basis
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the set up of anorganizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives
- Responsible for Stock option and award accounting and oversight of equity administration
- Support and manage external audit (E&Y) and tax compliance work, providing outside tax preparers with accounting information on a timely basis for income provisions and tax returns.
- Works closely with the Finance Department in our Germany office to ensure financial reporting controls are aligned and in compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
- Aid in production of the annual budget and forecasts. Ensure budgets, schedules and performance requirements are met.
- Implement and ensure adherence to accounting policies and procedures
- Identify opportunities to increase efficiencies and improve processes
- Develop and maintain internal controls for key processes ensuring all financial reporting controls are operating effectively in compliance with SOX
- Manage financial information systems monitoring and controls (MAS90)
- Set the accounting calendar annually and coordinate with FP&A, strategic offsite and BOD/Committee meeting calendar
- Manage Audit Committee reporting and meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of increasingly responsible accounting and reporting experience; biotech industry experience required.
- 4+ years management experience is required.
- Experience within a public company required.
- Experience with a Big Four certified public accounting firm is highly preferred.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) both U.S. and IFRS and SEC rules and regulations.
- Proven ability to effectively plan, organize and complete multiple complex activities, priorities and assignments on a timely basis.
- Excellent technical research, strong analytical ability, and the ability to identify and resolve problems with sound and accurate judgment
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Must be prepared to work additional hours in order to meet monthly, quarterly and annual close deadlines.
- Must have demonstrated hands-on execution skills
- Excellent written and oral communications skills are also required.
- Ability to work collaboratively and build strong relationships across the organization is a must.
