Executive Director, Strategic Finance

This is an exciting Strategic Finance role for an enterprise-minded ambitious individual who enjoys working in a dynamic and highly collaborative cross-functional environment. This individual will report to the SVP, Chief Financial Officer. This role offers the opportunity to significantly contribute to Dynavax’s long-range strategic plans and overall financial strategy. This is a highly collaborative role that will frequently interact with key business leaders and the executive leadership team to process and lead strategic financial thinking in partnership with the CFO.


Financial communications and Investor Relations Strategy

  • Lead the strategic priorities, direction and execution of the IR function and ensure complete and clear communications across variety of audiences
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to synthesize relevant business intelligence, including real-time insights and analysis of analyst research, investor sentiment and competitor activity, and company coverage across scientific, clinical and media domains.
  • Effectively prepare executive leadership for investor and external stakeholder interactions
  • Advance company engagement across members of the investment, scientific, clinical, media and advocacy communities, as appropriate.
  • Increase sponsorship through building relationships with new sell side analysts and potential new institutional investors

Capital markets and corporate valuation

  • Develop and establish framework to analyze the company’s corporate valuation model and long-term value drivers and opportunities
  • Perform financial analysis, strategic business analysis and industry research to establish KPIs to measure corporate financial performance against
  • Serve as the key resource working closely with the CFO and CEO on negotiations with regards to pricing or structuring of financing, providing accurate market judgments to the executive team

Strategic Decision Support

  • Develop and implement a Strategic Financial -Planning capability, including robust long-term strategic growth roadmaps that consider organic and inorganic growth opportunities. Provide short- and long-term strategic recommendations.
  • Build financial modeling and presentations to support the evaluation of strategic alternatives at the executive and Board level
  • Builds analytical models and performs regular financial, competitive, performance, and market analyses for the business in order to comprehensively value business opportunities and ensure well-founded strategies are presented to the relevant leadership.
  • Collaborates across the organization with top leadership, aiding in individualized strategy formulation for different projects and initiatives, in particular with the finance and corporate strategy organizations.


  • At least 12 years of progressive experience in finance including previous experience leading a financial planning function of a biopharmaceutical company
  • Previous experience leading IR function and track record of creating positive engagement with investment banking community, investor community and equity research analysts
  • Previous experience leading capital markets transactions and supporting corporate development decision-making
  • Must have strong analytical, strategic, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint is critical
  • Strong technical, communication, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated success building relationships across various levels within an organization
  • Proven ability to successfully own process and critical deliverables
  • Education: BA/BS required, MBA is a plus, CPA or CFA is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with financial applications (Vena, Microsoft AX, Power BI, etc.) is a plus.
  • High energy and flexibility.
  • Integrity and impeccable ethics are absolute requirements.
  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to perform repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Occasional travel required, as needed.
